How long can you drive a Camry on empty?

Chances are good that you have forgotten to gas up while you were out on your errand run, and once you realized you forgot, you maybe didn’t feel like going back and fueling up at the moment. Still, with your fuel light displaying in the dashboard indicating low fuel and the need to refuel as soon as possible, it’s understandable to wonder how long you really have before the car rolls to a stop from having no fuel. One of the most popular cars out there is the Toyota Camry. How long can you drive a Camry on empty? Read ahead for some thoughts on that.

Toyota Camry estimated driving range when the fuel gauge shows empty

Now, it is important to note that the range you can drive while your fuel gauge is pointing to the big E depends on many different factors, including the model year, the engine type, the driving conditions, and the general condition of the Camry at the time. If you are behind the wheel of a newer gasoline-powered Camry model, it is generally estimated that you might still be able to drive approximately 42 miles on average while the gauge is showing empty. However, that is an average, which not only means you might achieve a greater distance but also means you may not even be able to go that far.

So, with that being said, we recommend not taking those chances and instead always fueling up as soon as you can possibly get to a gas station once the Camry fuel gauge is pointing to empty and/or the fuel light is displaying. It is an even better idea to fuel up long before that happens so you never have to worry about that. A lot of people like to make sure their tank is at least half-full at all times, an idea which we can get behind. You do not want to take chances and wind up stranded in the middle of nowhere for such a simple reason as being out of gas.

Why is it bad to drive on empty?

Driving on empty does not just run the risk of stranding you; it also could do significant damage to your vehicle. When the tank is so low on fuel, the fuel pump is pulling from whatever it can find in there, which in instances of there not being much gas in the tank means it could be pulling sediment or debris that has settled over the years, which can damage the fuel pump and the whole works. If that happens, you’re looking at forking out plenty more dough to fix that problem than it would have cost you to just take a pit stop and refuel when it became time to do so.
