The IIHS has strict criteria when it rates vehicles for crashworthiness. There are four ratings available: Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor. The 2021 Toyota Sienna received the Good rating for all crash tests—small overlap front: driver side; small overlap front: passenger-side; moderate overlap front; side; roof strength; and head restraints & seats. The IIHS also rates the headlights, which received a Good rating. The ease of use for the LATCH (child seat anchors) also received the highest mark. 

The IIHS also rates safety and crash-prevention technology on a scale of Basic, Advanced, and Superior. The 2021 Toyota Sienna received the Advanced rating for its vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention, and the Superior rating for its vehicle-to-vehicle prevention. The system in question is the Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0 Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. 

What does the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection do? 

This system is designed to help reduce or avoid impacts with other vehicles or with pedestrians under certain circumstances. It uses a camera and radar technology and gives the driver audio and visual alerts if an imminent collision is detected. If the driver doesn’t react, the system can actually apply the brakes itself in an attempt to stop the collision.
